- Abstract: Introduction - In veterinary medicine, haematological and serum protein electrophoretic values represent an important collateral diagnostic tool for monitoring animal’s welfare, health, and diseas. The aim of this study was to report the haematological values, the serum total protein concentration, and the electrophoretic profile of serum proteins in Nicastrese goat, an indigenous breed reared in Catanzaro district (Italy). Materials and methods - This study was carried out on 50 lactating female Nicastrese goats, 7±3 weeks from parturition, ranging from 2 to 8 years of age. All animals were clinically healthy. On the basis of age, animals were divided in two groups: the first with age up to 4 years (23 animals) and the second with animals older than 4 years (27 animals). Two blood samples were collected from each animal by means of jugular venipuncture in order to obtain the complete blood count (CBC) (WBC, RBC, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, HDW, PLT, MPV, PDW, PCT, NEU, LYM, MONO, EOS, BASO), serum total protein concentration, and the electrophoretic profile of serum proteins (albumin, α1- globulins, α2-globulins, β1-globulins, β2-globulins γ-globulins and albumin/globulin ratio). Results and discussion - In Nicastrese goats, CBC values were similar to those reported in other goat breed by other Authors. Mean values of serum total proteins were in accordance with those reported by other Authors. In all sera analysed, six protein fractions were clearly resolved: albumin, α1-globulins, α2-globulins, β1-globulins, β2-globulins, and γ-globulins. In addition, according to previous study, our findings suggest that the influence of age should be considered when evaluating goats hematological values. Conclusion - The present study is the first to investigate a complete haematological profile and electrophoretic parameters in Nicastrese goats. Our findings confirm the influence of age on haematological values. The present study is a contribute to the knowledge of Nicastrese goat physiology and could be useful for the monitoring of health status and for the management and conservation of this autochthonous breed.
